Minnesota Private Wells: What the Health Department Says to Test

Before you size a pump or a filter for a Minnesota private well, know what is in the water. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) recommends the following, according to a March 2025 press release.

Tests recommended

MDH calls these five the most common contaminants in Minnesota wells. The release says more than 4 million Minnesotans rely on groundwater for drinking water and 1.1 million of them use a private well.

Treatment help

The release says a limited number of grants and low-interest loans are available to help offset treatment costs. It does not give amounts or eligibility. Not verified: any current program details; contact MDH.

What this means for pumps and filters

Test first, then choose treatment. A cartridge certified for one contaminant does not remove another; see our filter cartridge article. Pump choice depends on well depth and yield, which this source does not cover. Not verified: Minnesota well-construction and pump-installation rules; ask a licensed well contractor.

The release gives no nitrate limit or lab-sampling procedure, so ask your lab. Not verified: the nitrate limit.
