Wisconsin Private Wells: Testing Schedule from the DNR
The Wisconsin DNR recommends regular testing of private well water. Its page says:
What and how often
- Bacteria: once a year, and whenever taste, colour or smell changes.
- Nitrate: once a year, and before the well is used by a woman who is or may become pregnant.
- Arsenic: most users every five years; yearly in Outagamie, Winnebago or Brown counties or if a prior sample showed arsenic.
Thresholds named
- Nitrate is elevated above 10 ppm (mg/L). If elevated, avoid it if pregnant and do not give it to infants under six months or use it for formula.
- Arsenic is elevated above 10 ppb (ug/L).
- If a lab finds bacteria, stop drinking the water.
Sampling
Use a certified lab for each contaminant; the lab supplies a sampling kit. The page says samples must reach the lab within 48 hours, and improper collection often causes false positives.
After the result
Choose a filter or a new well only after you know the contaminant. Our filter cartridge article explains certification claims. Not verified: Wisconsin pump-installer licensing and well-construction rules.
