Arkansas Drip Irrigation: Pump and Component Basics from UADA Extension
Arkansas Drip Irrigation: Pump and Component Basics from UADA Extension
University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture publication FSA6160, "Basics of Drip Irrigation and Fertigation for Specialty Crops" (authors Taunya Ernst, Amanda McWhirt, Thomas Zimmerman, Erika Henderson, Mataya Duncan, Amanda Lay-Walters; code indicates 2023). Only stated points are included.
Components listed
- Water source: surface water, groundwater (wells) or municipal water.
- Pump types named: centrifugal, submersible, deep-well turbine and propeller.
- Filters: media, screen, disk and centrifugal-style separator.
- Mainlines and header lines, couplers, drip tape or tubing with in-line or point-source emitters, pressure regulators or pressure-compensating emitters.
- Injectors for chemigation (Venturi bypass or positive displacement metering pump), a backflow prevention valve, and pressure gauges on filters.
Design and maintenance points
- Test the water source before designing the system. Pond water carries dirt, mud and algae that must be filtered out; well water may have high iron that can precipitate and clog emitters.
- Oversize the pump when possible to allow future expansion, and split large fields into zones.
- Do not run the system more than 18 hours per day, to leave time for maintenance and repairs.
- Minimum pump size (gph) = number of emitters x emitter flow rate (gph).
- A 1-foot elevation change shifts pressure by about 0.433 psi.
- Use a backflow preventer between the water source and the injector.
- Clean filters as needed and gauges, where fitted, can be monitored daily for pressure drops; check source pumps and backflow systems weekly or more often; running irrigation for 5 to 10 minutes to flush drip tape is advised in the Irrigation Lines section.
- Winterize the system to extend pump and injector life.
Not verified: (not re-confirmed against the PDF): that filtration is called essential, splitting fields into zones, testing the source before design, cleaning filters as needed, and the Venturi/positive-displacement injector wording. Arkansas permits or rules for wells, and suitability for non-specialty crops; the publication focuses on specialty crops.
